1. When learning begins, ask honestly ·

Meng is the stage of not yet seeing clearly.

A neighborhood tool library and repair workshop is teaching beginners. The first rule is safety, but the goal is independence.

The Image gives us a clue: A spring issues from beneath the mountain: Meng. The noble person acts with resolve and cultivates virtue. We will read the six lines from the ground upward.

2. Set bounds, then release ·

At the first lesson, a teacher opens the child's restraints after setting clear limits; correction must lead toward freedom.

At an evening bicycle-repair class, instructor Lin starts with safety: clamp the wheel, wear gloves, never touch a spinning gear. Once learners follow, she removes the practice blocks and lets them work. If she keeps correcting every turn, they grow afraid and stop trying.

At the beginning, clear boundaries interrupt disorder and make learning possible. Where does a clear rule actually free you to learn?

3. Welcome and take responsibility ·

The door now opens to welcome a wife, while a son begins to manage the household; learning becomes practical responsibility.

When a young baker brings his partner into the family bakery, his grandmother hands them the spare key and the order book. He patiently teaches her the ovens instead of treating her as an outsider. She soon runs the morning shift, and the household and work hold together.

This line joins three images: embracing the inexperienced, welcoming a wife into the household, and a son able to manage the home. Who needs you to make room, not just give advice?

4. Do not lose yourself ·

A young woman turns toward a wealthy man and loses her own bearing; attraction has displaced sound judgment.

A talented young potter is courted by a flashy gallery owner who waves a gold contract. She skips her mentor's final glaze tests, drops her own careful style, and ignores the elder's warning. The deal brings no real benefit; she loses her footing and the work loses integrity.

This line uses a marriage image to warn against losing oneself before judgment has formed. What are you tempted to trade away when a golden offer appears?

5. Leave the closed room ·

Here the learner stands alone inside a closed room. The danger is not ignorance itself, but refusing a way out.

A learner stops coming to the workshop. He stays in a dim room, watching random clips, refusing to ask the mentor or test repairs on a real wheel. The more he avoids the open path of practice and another person's lamp, the more confusion locks him in.

Temporary ignorance is less dangerous than isolation inside it. Where might isolation be making your confusion stronger?

6. Learn with an open heart ·

The child finally asks with an open face. Admitting uncertainty lets a better answer enter.

The workshop's senior mechanic, known for decades of experience, asks a teenage volunteer to show her the new inventory app. She writes down each step, says plainly when she does not understand, and does not pretend. Her honest beginner's mind keeps the whole shop learning.

To hold an important position and still admit not knowing is a powerful form of intelligence. Where could admitting 'I don't know' make you a better guide?

7. Protect, do not attack ·

Firm hands stop an attack on the learner without striking back in anger. At this limit, protection matters more than punishment.

When a smooth-talking supplier begins pressuring younger volunteers at the tool library to pay for useless certificates, the lead mentor steps in firmly. She cancels the meeting, reports the scam, and stays at the door. She protects the learners but does not chase or shame anyone beyond the gate.

At the limit of confusion, firm intervention may be necessary, but its direction matters. Where must protection be firm without turning into attack?

8. What does an open mind need next? ·

Learning can open a way forward, but it must begin with a sincere wish to understand.

A spring emerges beneath a mountain: understanding has begun, but it needs direction, boundaries, and patient cultivation before it can become a clear stream. The six lines move from first discipline to receptive learning and, finally, the protection of what has been learned.

Ask yourself: In your own learning, where do clear boundaries help, and where does patient welcome matter more?
