1. Waiting is an active skill · 象曰：雲上於天，需；君子以飲食宴樂。
Xu is waiting when danger lies ahead.
需是在前方有险时等待合适时机。
After days of rain, a small volunteer supply group reaches a mountain valley where the only bridge is gone and the river is still rising. Their goal is to bring medicine and food to an isolated village.
连日大雨后，一支小型志愿补给队来到山间河谷：唯一的桥被冲断，河水还在上涨。 他们要把药品和食物送到与外界隔绝的村子。
The Image gives us a clue: Clouds rise above Heaven: Xu. The noble person eats, drinks, and rests with ease. We will read the six lines from the ground upward.

2. Keep the steady course · 需于郊，利用恆，無咎。
The traveler waits far from the river, tending the camp before danger reaches it. Routine is useful preparation here.
旅人离河还远，先把营地照料好；危险未到，守住日常便是准备。
The group camps on a dry meadow far from the flooded river. The leader keeps a simple routine: check weather reports, count medicine boxes, cook, and rest. No one wanders to the bank just to stare at the danger. Staying steady in the outskirts prevents needless mistakes.
队伍在远离涨水河道的干草坡扎营。领队维持简单节奏：看天气、清点药箱、做饭、休息；没人为了盯着危险而走到岸边。留在远郊的稳定，避免不必要的失误。
Danger is still distant. What ordinary routine keeps you from rushing toward a distant worry?
保持原来的正当工作和长期准备，不主动靠近风险，就不会有过失。 什么日常节奏，能让你不因远处的担忧而乱冲？
3. Do not move for gossip · 需于沙，小有言，終吉。
At the sandy bank, small complaints begin, but the crossing is still some distance away. Do not let chatter set the pace.
到了沙岸，闲言开始出现，但还未真正临险；别让议论决定脚步。
The team moves closer to a broad sandbank. Some companions begin to complain that the ferry captain is late and the village cannot wait. The leader stays centered, checks the water level, and refuses to let minor talk set the timetable. By evening a safe signal comes.
队伍走到一片宽阔沙洲附近。有人开始抱怨渡船船长迟到，说村里等不了。领队守住中心，查看水位，不让小话替他们决定时间。傍晚，安全的信号终于出现。
The water is closer, and complaints or gossip begin to circulate, but danger has not yet closed in. Which complaint can you hear without letting it set your pace?
守住中正，不被小话激怒或带节奏，最后仍能得到好结果。 哪种抱怨，你可以听见却不让它打乱你的节奏？
4. Do not camp in exposure · 需于泥，致寇至。
The path sinks into mud near the water; by standing exposed, the traveler invites trouble before the crossing begins.
路已陷入河边泥地，旅人过早暴露自己，尚未渡河就招来险情。
Tempted by a break in the rain, several members drag the raft into mud at the river's edge. Supplies sit exposed, and tracks show where they are. Opportunistic looters from the far bank notice. Trouble has not come only from the river; advancing too soon and camping badly invited it. They post watches and pull back carefully.
雨势稍歇，几个人被诱惑，把木筏拖到河边泥地。补给暴露在外，脚印清楚标出他们的位置；对岸的投机者注意到了。麻烦不全来自河水：太早推进、扎营不当，也把危险招来。他们只能设岗警戒，谨慎撤回。
The traveler has moved into mud at the very edge of danger and remains exposed. Where are you standing too exposed while danger is still forming?

5. Withdraw from the trap · 需于血，出自穴。
Wounded at the cave mouth, the traveler must follow the exit rather than prove endurance by staying.
在洞口受伤之后，旅人该顺势退出，而不是留在那里证明自己能扛。
A scouting pair tries to cross a slippery rock channel. One slips and cuts a leg; blood mixes with river water. They shelter in a riverside cave. A local guide tells them to stop proving courage and follow a side path out. They bind the wound and withdraw from the trap, keeping life and options.
两名侦察员尝试穿过湿滑的岩沟。一人滑倒割伤腿，血混进河水。他们躲进河边洞穴。当地向导叫他们别再逞强，沿侧路退出。他们包扎伤口，从困住自己的陷阱中撤出，先保住性命和选择。

6. Nourish readiness · 需于酒食，貞吉。
A shared meal at the crossing gives the group strength. Rest is part of readiness when eyes remain on the river.
渡口一餐使众人恢复力气；心仍留意河势，休息也能成为准备。
At the center of the group, the leader sets up a dry shelter, shares hot food and clean water, and lets everyone rest. They keep one person watching the river gauge. Nourishment is not forgetting the crossing; it keeps bodies and trust steady. In the morning they can decide from strength, not exhaustion.
处在队伍中心的领队搭起干燥棚，分发热食和净水，让大家休息；同时留一人盯着水位标尺。饮食安养不是忘记渡河，而是让身体和信任保持稳定。清晨，他们才能凭力量而不是疲惫做决定。

7. Welcome the unexpected · 入于穴，有不速之客三人來，敬之終吉。
Three unexpected guests arrive in the enclosed shelter. Receiving them respectfully may reveal a route the traveler missed.
三个意外来客走进避处；以礼相待，或许能发现自己未见的出路。
A storm forces the group into a closed cave. Three unexpected herders arrive, soaked and carrying their own maps. At first the group wants to turn them away. Instead, the leader shares tea and listens. The herders know a high safe path. Respect turns strangers into guides, and the waiting ends well.
一场风暴把队伍逼进封闭洞穴。三位没被邀请的牧羊人来了，浑身湿透，带着自己的地图。起初大家想赶他们走。领队却分茶、认真听。牧羊人知道一条高处安全路线。敬重让陌生人成了向导，等待终于有好的结局。
At the end of waiting, the traveler has entered an enclosed place, and three unexpected guests appear. Who unexpected might you respectfully listen to today?

8. What is ready while you wait? · 需：有孚，光亨，貞吉。利涉大川。
Waiting succeeds when it is grounded in sincere purpose and steady conduct.
等待能够成功，前提是内心有真实可信的方向，并在时机未到时守正不乱。
Heaven within gives strength; Water outside presents risk. The test is not whether one can move, but whether strength can avoid entering danger before the time is right.
内卦乾有力量，外卦坎有危险；真正的考验不是有没有能力前进，而是能否不让力量过早陷入险境。 六爻从远郊一步步走近水边，说明距离危险越近，等待越需要清醒、谦逊和应变。
