05 · Waiting (XŪ)
Xu is waiting when danger lies ahead. Heaven within gives strength; Water outside presents risk. The test is not whether one can move, but whether strength can avoid entering danger before the time is right. The six lines approach the water step by step, showing how patience must become more alert as risk draws near.
The judgment
Xu: there is sincerity; radiant success. Steadfastness brings good fortune. It is beneficial to cross the great river.
Waiting succeeds when it is grounded in sincere purpose and steady conduct. Xu does not advise remaining still forever. When conditions mature, the strength preserved through patient preparation makes the great crossing possible.

The six lines
- 初九 · Line 1 — Waiting in the open country. It is beneficial to remain constant. No blame.

- 九二 · Line 2 — Waiting on the sand. There is some minor talk. In the end, good fortune.
