I Ching Kun Line 2 Explained: Integrity in Everyday Action

How can you help without putting on a show? Kun’s second line gives three qualities: straight, square, and great. Together, they describe reliable action: honesty within, clear principles in conduct, and room to support others.

Straight. Square. Great.

The line says: straight, square, great; without rehearsal, nothing is unfavourable. The Wenyan commentary explains straightness through inner attentiveness, and squareness through right conduct. Our diagram highlights the second line from below; all six lines remain broken.

Without rehearsal does not mean you can skip learning or preparation. Here, we read it as acting without contrivance: you do not need to stage a performance when your intention and conduct are aligned.

Imagine a team update. State what is finished, admit what remains uncertain, and name the next person responsible. Offer help you can sustain, rather than promising everything. Honest facts and clear boundaries make cooperation more dependable.

六二：直方大，不習无不利。象曰：六二之動，直以方也。不習无不利，地道光也。文言曰：敬以直內，義以方外。

The second line names straightness, squareness and greatness. The Wenyan connects these with inner attentiveness and principled outward conduct. Here, “without rehearsal” is an interpretive rendering of 不習: it does not mean skipping learning or preparation. Our team update is a modern example, not an ancient quotation.
