I Ching Kun Line 1 Explained: Notice Small Warning Signs

Understand Kun’s first line, frost underfoot, with a practical study routine and three questions for noticing a developing pattern.

When should a small warning matter?

When should you take a small warning seriously? Kun begins with frost underfoot, before winter fully sets in. Its first line asks us to notice a direction while adjustment is still possible.

Look for a pattern, then check it.

Frost is an early sign in a developing season. In daily life, one setback does not prove disaster. Look for a repeated pattern, the conditions producing it, and evidence that it is growing.

初六：履霜，堅冰至。象曰：履霜堅冰，陰始凝也。馴致其道，至堅冰也。

The line and its Image describe gradual development. Our study example applies that idea to a routine: observe evidence, check repetition and respond while adjustment remains possible. One isolated difficulty does not establish a fixed outcome.
