Why eight trigrams? Eight questions for a stuck situation

The nature images are traditional. The eight practical questions are modern applications, not exhaustive ancient definitions or a compulsory sequence.

Why eight trigrams?

When something gets stuck, pushing harder is not always the answer. The eight trigrams offer eight useful questions. But why are there eight? Start with their three lines.

Three lines, two possibilities

Each line is either solid, yang, or broken, yin. Three positions give two times two times two: eight patterns. Beginning, progress, and completion can be a helpful modern analogy, rather than the historical explanation.

Qian and Kun: create and support

Traditional images give us a starting point. Qian, heaven, suggests creative strength. What are you trying to bring into being? Kun, earth, suggests receptive support. Do you have the time, resources, and space to sustain it?
