What is the I Ching?

The I Ching, or Book of Changes, is an early Chinese text for thinking about changing situations. Its 64 hexagrams are six-line patterns built from solid yang and broken yin lines. Each hexagram joins two three-line trigrams, whose images include heaven, earth, thunder, wind, water, fire, mountain and lake.

A pattern, not a verdict

Each hexagram has a judgment, an image and six line texts. They describe conditions and stages. A line at the bottom can speak to an early stage; a line near the top can describe a later or more exposed position. None of this gives a guaranteed outcome for a modern question.

How YiPhase presents it

Start with the original line pattern and Chinese name. Read the English guide for a plain-language explanation, then open the Chinese classics when you want to examine the source. Our illustrations and everyday examples are contemporary interpretations, clearly separated from the classical text.
