Five ways a situation moves.
Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal and Water are the Five Phases (五行, Wǔ Xíng). Think of them as a traditional language for processes and relationships. They are not five ingredients that automatically make an event happen.
Start here: a phase describes a tendency or role in a reading. The classical text of the I Ching and the later Five Phases framework are related traditions, but they are not the same text or the same method.
What each phase evokes
Radiance
Becoming visible, warming and bringing matters into the open.
Support
Holding, receiving and giving development a stable place.
Form
Setting boundaries, refining and making a useful shape.
Flow
Moving through openings and adapting to the ground.
These short English phrases are YiPhase teaching metaphors. They are not promises about personality, health, money or a material object's effect.
Two relationships, not a good-versus-bad score
Generating · 相生
Wood → Fire → Earth → Metal → Water → Wood
One phase gives rise to or supports the next. In a question, support can help, but it can also cost the giver effort.
Controlling · 相克
Wood → Earth → Water → Fire → Metal → Wood
One phase restrains another. A restraint can be an obstacle, or a boundary that keeps excess in check; context decides how to discuss it.

How eight trigrams connect to five phases
In Mei Hua Yi Shu, the trigram is assigned a phase before the body (体) and use (用) are compared. The natural image remains separate: 乾 is Heaven in its image and Metal in this phase mapping.

A worked example from our study
For the independently cast moment of 2026-09-28 17:13 in China, the time method gives 同人 with its first line changing toward 遯. Here is the chain a careful interpretation should show:
1 · Identify the parts
Upper 乾 is Metal; lower 离 is Fire. The lower trigram moves, so 乾 is the body and 离 is the use.
2 · Explain the relation
Fire controls Metal. This can symbolize outside demands pressing on the questioner's available structure or resources; it does not establish a literal loss.
3 · Read the change
After the first line changes, the use becomes 艮 Earth. Earth generates Metal. Narrowing scope or strengthening support may alter the conditions, but it does not guarantee an outcome.
Body and use are selected from the actual moving trigram. We do not label a person's birth element, and we do not attach a Five Phases verdict to a separate coin cast without stating a valid method.
From learning language to design language
YiPhase may later use the five themes to organize objects and gifts: Growth, Passion, Grounded, Clarity and Flow. Those are modern brand interpretations. A stone's color or a product label does not make it an ancient prescribed remedy or alter a reading.
Read the classical basis: Mei Hua Yi Shu, volume 1 (cycles, trigram mapping and time casting), volume 3 (body/use, change and context), and Shangshu, Hongfan (early Five Phases text). These sources inform the explanation; the English examples and product themes are YiPhase's own.
