What is the connection between Feng Shui and the I Ching?

Feng Shui is a family of traditional practices concerned with place, orientation and the relationship between people and surroundings. The I Ching’s eight trigrams, or bagua, provide one shared symbolic language: Heaven, Lake, Fire, Thunder, Wind, Water, Mountain and Earth.

The Shuogua (Explanation of the Trigrams) connects the trigrams with natural images and directions. The diagram here uses the Later-Heaven bagua. It shows north at the top for easy compass reading; many traditional diagrams put south at the top. The directions stay the same.

How do the Five Elements work in Feng Shui?

Five Elements generating cycle: Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, Water

Generating: Wood → Fire → Earth → Metal → Water → Wood. Controlling: Wood → Earth → Water → Fire → Metal → Wood.

These traditional relationships are used to interpret interactions. They are not a measurement showing that a person or room “lacks” an element. A colour or material can be a modern design reminder; it does not prove an outcome.

MEI HUA YI SHU & FENG SHUI

Does a Mei Hua cast evaluate a house?

The Mei Hua Yi Shu contains household and building divination sections. It applies body/use and changing patterns to questions about a dwelling. That is a traditional divination approach to a question about a home; it is not the same procedure as a survey of the building’s orientation, surroundings and layout.

For example, a cast with Wood as body and Water as use gives “use generates body”: a favourable initial relationship. That result belongs to the cast. It does not establish that a water feature belongs in a particular corner, or that adding one will create good fortune.

On YiPhase, start with the actual question, read the body/use judgment, then use the I Ching’s hexagram and changing line to examine how the situation develops.

A HOME WORKSPACE · MODERN EXERCISE

One room. One observable change.

A home workspace with labels for light, clear movement and one focused task

How can I begin at home?

  1. Describe the situation. “I lose focus at this desk in the afternoon.” Note glare, interruptions and the work you are trying to do.
  2. Learn the associations. Thunder/Wood suggests a beginning; Mountain/Earth suggests a pause. Treat these as prompts to observe activity and rest, rather than a diagnosis.
  3. Make one ordinary adjustment. Reduce screen glare, clear a walking route or define a place for unfinished work. Keep exits clear and lighting comfortable.
  4. Review the result. After a week, compare focus and comfort with your earlier notes. Keep the useful change or revise it.

This exercise is YiPhase’s modern application. It is separate from the classical directional correspondences and does not require a purchase.

Common questions about I Ching Feng Shui

Is the bagua a floor plan for every house?

No. This diagram teaches Later-Heaven trigram directions. Different Feng Shui schools use different methods to apply a bagua. It is not automatically a map of your rooms or a replacement for checking orientation and the actual site.

Can I use Mei Hua Yi Shu to ask about moving home?

You can ask one clear question about the situation and read its body/use and changing line. Keep that symbolic reading separate from the practical checks needed for a move, such as suitability, condition and cost.

Do I need crystals or ornaments for Feng Shui?

No purchase is needed for the exercises here. Our agate and Green Phantom Quartz pieces are optional cultural and aesthetic objects, not prescribed remedies for an unfavourable judgment.

Does YiPhase offer a personalised Feng Shui assessment?

This page is an introductory learning resource, not a property-specific assessment. It does not collect your address or floor plan. Start with the trigrams and Five Elements, then study how the symbolic methods differ.
