1. Small steps, right measure · 象曰：山上有雷，小過；君子以行過乎恭，喪過乎哀，用過乎儉。
Small Exceeding is a time for modest, timely adjustments, not a license for grand action or simply a label for a small mistake. The flying bird is safer descending than climbing higher.
小过不是单指犯小错，而是在特定时势里让小事稍稍越常、以谦恭审慎补偏。《彖传》明确说“可小事，不可大事”，飞鸟若越飞越高，反而无处安身；往低处才有吉。
Thunder stands above the mountain. The Image names small forms of added care: courtesy, grief, and frugal use.
雷在山上，超过平常位置。《象传》列出礼敬、哀思、俭用三种可略加深的日常行动，均非扩张权势的大事。
In a season when only small adjustments fit, a bird’s call reminds us: descending to shelter is wiser than climbing. This hexagram allows careful handling of minor matters, not grand ventures.
当大势只容小事微调，飞鸟的鸣声提醒：往低处栖身比继续攀升更安全。此卦许人谨慎处理小事，不宜发动大事。
2. Do not climb into danger · 飛鳥以凶。
The bird is still free but is flying away from shelter into the storm. The first warning concerns direction: ascent now leaves it nowhere safe to land.
初爻便追高，上行与此卦“宜下”的时势相逆。《正义》说它无所错足。
A first-year student, excited, jumps into an advanced coding bootcamp before learning loops. She keeps adding harder projects, ignoring the beginner class and study group that could ground her.
大一学生兴奋地跳进高级编程训练营，连循环都没练熟。她不断加码更难的项目，忽略能打基础的入门课和学习小组。
If she continues upward, the gap widens; if she returns to basics, she can land safely.
若继续往上冲，差距会拉大；若回到基础，就能安全落地。
3. Meet at the fitting level · 過其祖，遇其妣；不及其君，遇其臣；无咎。
The ancient kinship and court images locate a fitting encounter without claiming a place above one's role. The envoy reaches an elder and a minister rather than forcing entry to the ruler's hall.
古文以祖妣、君臣说明遇合有分际。《正义》重在“过而得之”却不僭至君位。
Maya wants a permit for a block party. Instead of emailing the mayor, she asks her grandmother’s longtime neighbor, then the city clerk who handles street permits.
玛雅想为街区派对申请许可。她没有直接给市长写信，而是先请教祖母的老邻居，再找负责街道许可的市政职员。
She does not claim the mayor’s authority. The party moves forward without blame.
她不越级冒用市长职权，事情顺利推进，没有过错。
4. Protect before following · 弗過防之，從或戕之，凶。
The gate is unfastened, and the smiling guide conceals a blade. Extra vigilance is the small correction needed here.
小过之时也有必须稍加防范之处。《正义》说不能先防、反去顺从可能的加害者，会招致凶险。
At a shared woodshop, a volunteer props the back door open for a friendly stranger who says he’s a new member.
在共享木工坊，一名志愿者为自称新会员的友善陌生人敞开后门，没人核对名单。
No one checks his name against the list. He later steals tools. The danger was not too much caution, but too little protection while following a smiling guide.
后来工具被盗。问题不在防范太多，而在跟随笑脸向导时防得不够。
5. Pause, then adapt · 无咎，弗過遇之。往厲必戒，勿用永貞。
The travelers stop where the bridge is broken and examine another way. Meeting a limit without forcing it avoids blame; pressing forward would be dangerous.
九四能不越分而相遇，可免咎；但前行仍有险，须戒。《正义》也提醒只靠自守、从不与人交往，不能长期担当正道。
Two hikers reach a broken footbridge. They test the planks, see the drop, and choose a longer trail instead.
两名徒步者来到断掉的步行桥前。他们试了试木板，看见下方陡峭，改走更长的山路。
Pausing avoids blame, but they do not turn the pause into a forever rule: next time they will still explore new routes with proper caution.
停下来可免咎，但他们不把暂停变成永远不动的规矩：下次仍会谨慎探索新路线。
6. Do not mistake a small catch for rain · 密雲不雨，自我西郊，公弋取彼在穴。
The archer can target what hides in the cave, but the waiting fields still receive no rain. Classical commentary treats the narrow capture as limited success and warns that force cannot substitute for wider care.
阴云虽浓却不降雨，说明力量未能化作广泛润泽。《正义》读射取穴中物为只捕得隐伏的小患，并指出单凭威武不能代替德惠。
A school principal sees low attendance. She catches one truant student hiding in the bathroom and calls that a win.
校长发现出勤率低，抓住一个躲在厕所的逃课学生，便当作胜利。
But the deeper cause—no bus route for the east side—remains. The clouds are dense, yet no rain reaches the fields. The small capture does not solve the wider drought.
但更深的原因——东区没有校车路线——仍在。乌云虽密，雨没落到田里；抓到一个，不等于解决更大的旱情。
7. Return before overreach becomes a trap · 弗遇過之，飛鳥離之，凶，是謂災眚。
The bird has passed the chance to rest and now strikes the net. Its small excessive ascent has become a real trap.
越过可遇、可止的时机，便成过亢。《正义》将“离”解作遭罗网，灾祸由自过而来。
A freelance designer keeps accepting bigger clients despite missed deadlines. She sees a warning ledge—turn down one contract, hire help—but flies past it.
自由设计师不断接下更大的客户，尽管已错过截止期。她看见可停的警示台——拒掉一份合同、请帮手——却继续飞过。
The new contract’s penalty clause catches her like a net. The trap came from ignoring the safe place to stop.
新合同的违约金条款像罗网困住她。灾祸来自越过可停之处。
8. Would a smaller move fit better? · 小過：亨。利貞。可小事，不可大事。飛鳥遺之音，不宜上宜下，大吉。
Classical commentary reads the 'exceeding' as a small adjustment suited to its time. The permission is limited: minor matters can be handled, but a great undertaking would overreach.
《正义》提醒“小过”非单纯罪过，而是因时对小事略加厚行。卦辞划清范围：小事可行，大事不可冒进。
At the extreme, the bird that keeps rising meets a net.
六爻由初飞受险，转向懂得在合适的位置相遇、及时设防、谨慎而不久守不变；然后呈现密云不雨、只取穴中一物的有限成效，最终以高飞入网告诫不可过亢。
