1. Let influence touch, not pull ·

A newcomer tries a beginner rowing session on a city river.

Six small pulls show how influence works: a toe tests the water, a calf wants to push off, thighs follow the crew, thoughts circle around friendship, an upper-back touch steadies, and talk fills the dock. The hexagram asks whether openness to a new group stays joined with your own steady center.

A mountain receives the lake. Make room to hear another person before forming an answer; openness need not surrender judgment.

2. First stir ·

One toe tests the lake; the rest of the body has not yet moved.

At the river, your bare big toe touches the water. The rest of you stays on the dock. You feel a small yes, but you haven't decided anything. Notice the ripple; don't sign up for the whole season yet.

The first impulse is small, like a toe testing water. Notice it before treating it as a decision. What small first signal are you noticing right now?

3. Stay and discern ·

A tense calf wants to step, but the traveler chooses to stay seated.

Your calf tenses; you want to push off and prove you can keep up. The instructor says to sit still for one minute. Following the reflex might tip the boat; staying put lets the feeling become a real choice.

The calf is ready to move. Following a reflex is risky; staying where you are gives feeling time to become discernment. Where would a pause turn impulse into discernment?

4. Do not follow blindly ·

The thighs follow the crowd uphill before the person decides for themselves.

Your thighs pull you into the boat, but only because the crew is already rowing. You grip the oar and follow their rhythm without asking whether it suits you. Moving just to stay with the group can end in regret.

Now the impulse carries the whole person forward. If you move only because others move, the journey may bring regret. When are you moving only because others are moving?

5. Keep a steady center ·

Friends move in and out; one person checks what truly stirs the heart.

Back ashore, you keep replaying who smiled at you and who didn't. A steady center eases regret, but restless worry can make friends respond only to your anxiety. Let them meet you, not your spinning thoughts.

Influence now travels through thought and friendship. A steady center removes regret; restless back-and-forth can make others follow your preoccupations instead of meeting you freely. How can you steady your thoughts before they shape your friendships?

6. Feel without grasping ·

A light touch on the upper back offers support without pulling.

On the next row, a crewmate rests a hand on your upper back and says nothing. The touch is near the heart but doesn't grab it. You feel cared for without being pushed, and you make a measured stroke. No regret.

The upper back lies close to the heart but does not expose it. A measured response avoids regret, while inviting you to ask whether your care has real depth. What does a measured response look like in your current situation?

7. Beyond words ·

Cheeks and tongues are busy; words alone may not carry real feeling.

Afterward, everyone talks at the dock. You describe the perfect morning, the beautiful river, the new friends. The words are warm, but they don't yet prove trust. Notice whether your jaw is doing the work your heart hasn't done.

At the top, influence may be all jaw, cheek, and tongue. Persuasive words can move a moment without creating a lasting connection. Where are words moving faster than genuine connection?

8. Where is a new influence asking for both your openness and your steadiness? ·

The six lines trace influence up the body: a toe stirs, a calf wants to move, a thigh follows others. Thought attracts companions, feeling reaches the back, and at last words fill the mouth. The question is how deeply each response is felt and whether it deserves action.

The ancient marriage image speaks of two sides responding to one another. Attraction opens a path when it is joined with constancy and right conduct; the marriage wording belongs to its historical setting.

Where is a new influence asking for both your openness and your steadiness?
