1. When the load bends the beam ·

A riverside craft pavilion in a small town has taken on more than it was built to carry.

Its central beam sags after heavy rain, yet neighbors keep storing looms, kilns, and festival gear inside. This hexagram is about a load beyond the usual limit: first notice the bending beam, then choose careful, proportionate action instead of pretending the old structure is fine.

Water rising above trees pictures pressure beyond the usual limit. Meet it without fear, and if withdrawal is needed, do so without bitterness.

2. Prepare with care ·

White grass cushions a heavy vessel before it touches the ground.

At the craft pavilion, a volunteer must set down a heavy bronze vessel. She lays clean white grass beneath it and checks the base before releasing her hands. The preparation may look small, but an exceptional weight makes this cushioning matter. Care prevents harm before the vessel is even moved again.

What small extra layer of care might protect a fragile thing before you move it?

3. New growth from old roots ·

The old willow grows a fresh shoot beside an unlikely new partnership.

Beside the pavilion, an old willow stump pushes up fresh shoots. An older boatbuilder and his much younger adult wife reopen a small repair shed together; neighbors once doubted the age gap. The classical line uses such an ancient marriage as an image of renewal, not a modern rule. The first repair goes without disadvantage.

Where might fresh growth be waiting in something you had already written off?

4. Recognize the failing beam ·

A roof beam is visibly bending beneath a weight it can no longer bear.

During a storm the pavilion’s central timber beam visibly sags and cracks. Organizers want to hang more festival banners and stack heavier benches upstairs. Adding force to the same failing supports will not save the roof. They first close the upstairs area and study the posts. The line warns: a bent main beam is dangerous.

What warning sign are you tempted to cover with more activity?

5. Strengthen the support ·

Sound posts lift the beam; the carpenter checks what supports its weight.

A carpenter raises the sagging beam onto two sound timber posts and checks every joint. The pavilion can carry its main load again. Then a member suggests spending the remaining repair budget on a decorative sign instead of replacing a cracked side brace. The main repair is good, but a distracting side aim could leave regret.

After a main problem is fixed, what side distraction could quietly undo it?

6. Do not confuse bloom with roots ·

A weathered willow briefly blossoms beside another unusual marriage.

In spring the old willow puts out showy blossoms. An older woman and her younger adult husband organize a one-day craft fair under it, drawing crowds and photos. The classical marriage image points to visible renewal that may not last; the event is neither wrong nor worthy of special praise. They enjoy it, then plan for roots.

When something looks renewed on the surface, how do you check whether roots are growing?

7. Know the limit of the crossing ·

The flood rises over the traveler’s head as others reach out a rope.

Floodwater covers the low path to the pavilion. A volunteer wades in to carry out the last loom, believing the task must be finished. The water rises over her head; companions throw a rope and shout her back. The outcome is dangerous, though her commitment is not blamed. Good intent does not erase physical limits.

Where do you need to respect a limit even when your motive is good?

8. Where in your own life or community is an ordinary support already bending under an unusual load, and what would proportionate care look like?

The lines move from extra preparation and unlikely renewal to a failing beam and a stronger one. The final crossing asks where courageous commitment becomes danger.

A bending beam signals an imbalance in what is carrying the load. The answer is to acknowledge the strain and move toward a workable remedy.

Where in your own life or community is an ordinary support already bending under an unusual load, and what would proportionate care look like?
